Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill Review – Small & Brilliant!

If you are looking for an affordable charcoal grill that is portable, user-friendly, and cooks great food, then you are in the right place.

In this article, I will tell you all you need to know about the Weber Go-Anywhere grill and why I love it. The review is based on my own experience with cooking various dishes with this brilliant little grill.

Although it offers great cooking performance and excellent value for money, there are still a few minor drawbacks and I will discuss them as well.

Now, let’s kick off our review of the Weber Go-Anywhere!

Weber Go-Anywhere 121020 Grill Features and Specs

Weber Go-Anywhere is a portable tabletop model that is one of the most affordable Weber grills on the market.

It’s a compact hibachi-style charcoal grill designed specifically for camping and tailgating but I also like to use it at home.

I do have a bigger grill as well. Yet, if I’m not cooking a huge amount of food I often choose to cook with this one. It’s just so effortless to use and clean it!

The Go-Anywhere is surprisingly versatile and works great for cooking anything from skewers and steaks to hotdogs and burgers.

There is also a propane gas version of this grill available on Amazon.

Features

Design and Materials: The grill looks nice and sharp with a black porcelain-enameled exterior. Designed to be compact and portable, the Go-Anywhere is sturdy but lightweight. It has short legs that can be folded up to save space and to keep the lid in place so that you can carry the grill from the top handle.

Grill Grates and Cooking Area: The 160 square inch grilling area is large enough to cook 6 burgers patties or 12 skewers at a time. The grilling grate is made of plated steel and is easy to clean with a metal wire brush.

Air Vents: The air vents on the top of the lid and bottom of the grill allow you to easily adjust the airflow to reach the right cooking temperature when the lid is closed. I usually keep the bottom wents open and only adjust the top vents.

Why I Love My Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill

I really love this little grill and use it all the time at home as well in parks and on road trips.

Here are some good reasons to get one for yourself:

Fast and Easy to Assemble

The grill doesn’t have too many parts and the instructions are very clear. All you need is a Phillips head screwdriver.

Assembling the Go-Anywhere only took me 5 minutes.

The grill doesn’t have too many parts and assembling it is a breeze

Compact and Lightweight

This grill is designed to be as portable as possible. It doesn’t take much space and only weighs 15 lbs so you can easily fit it in your car trunk.

Thanks to the brilliant folding legs you can also carry it with one hand. One great thing about this fantastic little travel grill is that you put some necessary things like charcoal and cleaning and cooking accessories inside the grill while carrying it.

This leaves your other hand free to carry the food to be grilled (or a cooler full of cold beers!)

Great Cooking Performance

I have tried cooking many dishes with this grill and they always turned out great. If you don’t know where to start, I recommend that you try this Chinese chicken skewers recipe.

You can even use this small charcoal grill for cooking barbecue foods like slow-smoked pork shoulder steaks or smoked salmon candy.

Affordable

Considering the sturdy built and high-quality materials, the Go-Anywhere is a surprisingly affordable grill and offers great value for money.

Any Drawbacks?

While the Weber Go-Anywhere is an excellent grill, it has a few small disadvantages:

  • No Ash Tray: Cleaning the grill is very easy and fast but a removable ash tray would still be great. Now you have to take off the grill grate and charcoal grate and then pour the ashes out.
  • Relatively Small Cooking Area: This is a portable tabletop grill so you can’t expect too much. Neverthless, if you are planning to host big BBQ parties you need to get something bigger.
  • Needs an Elevated Platform: The grill needs to placed on a table or other elevated platform unless you want to crouch down while cooking.

Customer Reviews of Weber Go-Anywhere Portable Charcoal Grill

So far this review has been based entirely on my own experiences with using the grill.

However, it’s also interesting to see how other users have rated it. It could even be that I missed something that other users have noticed while using the grill.

Weber Go-Anywhere charcoal grill is a very popular product so it has thousands of ratings on different online stores. This means I had plenty of data to analyze.

Below is a chart where I have combined the customer review ratings from Amazon, Homedepot, and Walmart (over 5,300 reviews in total):

Weber Go Anywhere Grill Customer Ratings

We can see that 94 percent of customers gave the grill 5 or 4 stars, which is a very high user review score.

Here are some accessories that you should consider buying with your new grill:

Weber Go-Anywhere Grill Cover & Carry Bag

You can find a handy grill cover and carry bag for your Weber Go-Anywhere on Amazon. It helps with protecting the grill from moisture and dust. You can also put your grilling tools and other accessories in the bag.

Grilling Tools

When I bought the Weber Go-Anywhere I bought a new grilling tool set as well.

Having such essential things as tongs and a spatula makes grilling much easier. Some tool sets also include a wire brush for cleaning the grill. Another option is to buy a cleaning brush separately.

How to clean Weber Go-Anywhere grill?

Cleaning the Weber Go-Anywhere grill is very simple. Just brush the grilling grate clean with a wire brush and then remove it. Next, take off the charcoal grate and pour the ashes out of the grill.

It’s important to make sure that the ashes have cooled down completely. Or you can just put them in a metal bucket to avoid the risk of fire.

What are the main differences when comparing Weber Go-Anywhere vs Smokey Joe charcoal grill?

You can spot one of the main differences between the Weber Go-Anywhere and Smokey Joe charcoal grills right away when you take a look at them. The Go-Anywhere is a rectangular-shaped grill while the Smokey Joe is round.

However, both grills have almost the same amount of grilling space — 160 square inches on the Go-Anywhere and 165 square inches on the Smokey Joe.

What I don’t like about the Smokey Joe is that it doesn’t have any carry handles. Also, the legs can’t be folded so it takes up more space in your trunk or in the storage.

One thing to note is that the Smokey Joe weighs only 9 pounds while the Go-Anywhere weighs 15 pounds. In addition, the Go-Anywhere is slightly more expensive.

How long does the Weber Go-Anywhere portable charcoal grill last?

Even though it’s affordable and lightweight, the Weber Go-Anywhere is a very durable grill. Take good care of it and try not to scratch the porcelain-enameled surface and it can last for as long as 10 years or more.

Weber Go-Anywhere Grill Review – Should You Buy It?

Weber grills have a good reputation and I think that they completely deserve it. In addition to this portable charcoal grill, I’m also a long-time owner of the excellent Weber Q3200 gas grill.

The bottom line is that I have been very happy with my Weber Go-Anywhere grill and there are still many dishes that I wanna try to cook with it.

It’s certainly one of the best charcoal grills you can get for under 100 dollars.

There is so much to like about this grill and it only has a few minor drawbacks. It’s great for camping, tailgating, road trips, and smaller cookouts at home.

So unless you are looking for something big and permanent for your backyard you should definitely give this little guy a chance!
